In a recent and unexpected update, Facebook says that it will shut down Facebook facial recognition and delete data for more than a billion users.
What is Facebook Facial Recognition?
Face or Facebook Facial recognition is used to analyse the photos and videos that we think you’re in on Facebook, such as your profile picture and photos and videos that you’ve been tagged in, to make a unique number for you, called a template. When you turn your face recognition setting on, Facebook creates your template and use it to compare to other photos, videos and other places where the camera is used (e.g. live video) to recognise if you appear in that content.
Why is Facebook Facial Recognition being shut down?
In a recent update on Tuesday, Facebook’s newly named parent company Meta explained that it would close shop on its facebook facial recognition systems and delete a massive collection of more than a billion facial recognition templates used to pair faces with photos and videos. Facebook will no longer do that pairing moving forward for users who previously opted in.
Facebook facial recognition was introduced in 2010 and was used to automatically tag photos with names.
Even though this feature was termed as something ‘extraordinary’ at that time, however, now, considering the name change around Metaverse and concerns about Facebook’s privacy and moderation failings, Facebook doesn’t want to take a chance this time.
Now we believe that this is something that would not effect the users in a major way. Perhaps, many of us didn’t even know that this feature was available on Facebook.
