WhatsApp new updated privacy policy woes continue! Now, the Centre has asked Delhi High Court to stop implementation of its updated privacy policy, which is supposed to come into effect from May 15th, 2021.

WhatsApp new privacy policy was earlier supposed to be updated on 8th February, 2021, however it was later postponed as a number of users had quit WhatsApp and switched to other platforms like Signal and Telegram. Now, it has decided to roll the policy on May 15th, 2021.

The petition has been filed by Seema Singh, Meghan, and Vikram Singh, and argues that messaging app new privacy policy indicates the “fissures” in the Indian data protection and privacy laws.

What information is WhatsApp collecting?

The most prominent changes in the terms are how WhatsApp shares your data with Facebook and other subsidiaries.
“The information we share with the other Facebook Companies includes your account registration information (such as your phone number), transaction data, service-related information, information on how you interact with others (including businesses) when using our Services, mobile device information, your IP address, and may include other information identified in the Privacy Policy section entitled ‘Information We Collect’ or obtained upon notice to you or based on your consent,” WhatsApp on the information it shares with Facebook and its subsidiaries.

As per PTI, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has also made the statement in its affidavit filed in response to a petition against the new proposed privacy policy changes by the social giant. It was also recently reported that the government had asked the instant messaging firm to review its controversial and proposed privacy policy changes.
