Beware of this WhatsApp flaw!

WhatsApp

WhatsApp has been in news since the beginning of year 2021, and for reasons not so sanguine. Now, there is a new flaw on WhatsApp, which has come to light where the attacker can get anyone’s WhatsApp account deactivated remotely.

To add to the misery, the security feature 2FA cannot work against this flaw!

Here’s how WhatsApp security flaw works –

hacker first attempts to install WhatsApp on their phone using your number. However, they aren’t able to register on the app with your number as they’ll require a six-digit registration code. So, the hacker tries multiple attempts to sign in using random code registration digits after which WhatsApp blocks the code entries on the app installed on the hacker’s phone for 12 hours straight.

Now, you might be thinking that’s not too bad. But, here’s where it gets tricky. The hacker now contacts WhatsApp customer support via email stating that their phone has been stolen and wants their account that’s registered with ‘your’ number deactivated.

Now, there’s no way for the instant messaging platform to know whether the email is really from you or someone else and this is the weakness that the hackers can easily exploit. As per a report by Forbes, there are no questions asked to confirm your ownership of the number. An automated process gets triggered and your account will be deactivated.

Scary, RIGHT!?

The instant messaging giant has not rolled. out any notification regarding this flaw, nor does it plan to combat such flaws in the near future. Perhaps, there are more important matters, such as privacy privacy policy, to focus their attention to.
