Are Hashtags On LinkedIn Effective?

Hashtags On LinkedIn

The topic of hashtags on LinkedIn has been long debated. As you may recall, for a long time, LinkedIn didn’t actually support hashtags at all, but then in 2018, the platform not only reactivated hashtag discoverability, but it also started pushing hashtag use in an effort to get more users manually categorizing their posts.

Yes, hashtags on LinkedIn can be effective when used strategically. Hashtags help categorize and organize content, making it easier for users to discover and engage with specific topics. When you include relevant and popular hashtags in your LinkedIn posts, you increase the visibility of your content to a broader audience.

Here are some tips for using hashtags effectively on LinkedIn:

  1. Use Relevant Hashtags: Choose hashtags that are directly related to the content of your post. This helps your content reach people interested in those specific topics.
  2. Mix Popular and Niche Hashtags: Include a mix of popular, widely used hashtags and more niche or industry-specific hashtags. Popular hashtags can expose your content to a larger audience, while niche hashtags can target a more specific and engaged audience.
  3. Keep it Concise: Don’t overload your posts with too many hashtags. Using a few relevant and well-chosen hashtags is more effective than using a large number of them. Aim for 3-5 hashtags per post.
  4. Create Your Own Branded Hashtag: Consider creating and using a unique branded hashtag for your company or personal brand. This can help build a community around your content and make it easier for others to find related posts.
  5. Monitor and Adapt: Keep an eye on trending hashtags within your industry or niche. If there’s a relevant trending hashtag, consider incorporating it into your posts to capitalize on the increased visibility.
  6. Engage with Hashtags: Click on hashtags in your posts to explore related content and engage with others using the same hashtags. This can help you connect with like-minded individuals and expand your network.

Remember that the effectiveness of hashtags can vary, and it’s essential to monitor your analytics to see which hashtags generate the most engagement for your specific audience. LinkedIn provides insights into post performance, allowing you to assess the impact of your hashtag strategy.

From another POV, hashtags are less important because most of the time, relevant mentions and indicators are included in the post anyway, and that’s enough to ensure the system can show your post to the most interested audiences.

n theory, that could mean that LinkedIn wouldn’t actually need somebody to add in a repeated hashtag like the above example, because the system would be able to identify the “Meta” mention within the text.

As a bonus, here’s a listing of the top 50 most-used hashtags on LinkedIn, as of 2021.

LinkedIn specifically notes that its system “is not designed for virality”, so hashtags are not necessarily supposed to work on LinkedIn the way that they do on other apps.

That could be part of the reason why LinkedIn is de-emphasizing them, in order to avoid people gaming the system, but the bottom line is that you probably don’t need to be as concerned about hashtags on LinkedIn as you may have been in the past, depending on the context.

In a nutshell, hashtags on LinkedIn are just fine as long you don’t overdo or depend on them!
