Google + Jio + Airtel = High speed INTERNET

Google

Internet giant Google is in talks with Indian telecom giants – Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel to take internet speed in India to a new level by introducing technology that sends light beams – instead of radio waves – between transmitters and receivers attached to servers placed on buildings and structures.

This project by Google is named as PROJECT TAARA

Light beams for internet

This project can provide access to internet in places where laying down optic fibre cables is not feasible. The project has been piloted in Andhra Pradesh and uses free-space optical communications like light beams to provide internet connectivity to far-flung regions at a speed of 20 gigabytes per second. This is a significant increase from the current one gigabyte per second that most customers have access to currently.

“Taara links offer a cost-effective and quickly deployable way to bring high-speed connectivity to remote areas. Taara links help plug critical gaps to major access points, like cell towers and WiFi hotspots, and have the potential to help thousands of people access the educational, business, and communication benefits of the web.” Google X’s website says.

“India, specifically now has among the cheapest mobile data per GB in the world, with mobile data prices having reduced by 95% in the last 5 years, as per TRAI in 2019. Today, Indian users consume close to 10 GB of data, each month, on average,” it said.

BTW, FYI –

India’s average mobile download speed is 12.07 Mbps, much lower than the global average of 35.26 Mbps, according to the index for September 2020. The index puts India at the 70th position in terms of fixed broadband speed, a surge of two spots from the last time.
