Instagram has recently launched an Instagram Lite version of its app in India, which is currently available to Android users only.
Instagram vs. Instagram Lite
As the name suggests, Instagram Lite is introduced to increase the reach of the platform on low end devices, which do not have all capabilities or storage that of a high-end smartphone. It is designed to work seamlessly with devices which have low processing memory and/or slow download bandwidth.
One of the foremost differentiating factor (which has indeed gathered many eyeballs) is the app size. Instagram app uses approx 30 MB, whereas the lite app will only borrow 2 MB of your smartphone space. Cool! Isn’t it? So, if you phone regularly gives you a notification to free up your memory, the Lite app is the best bet.
Almost all features are available on the lite app, with some limitation on the number of fonts for your stories. However, you won’t find dedicated tabs for IGTV, Reels or Shopping. But, that’s not much to worry about. Is it? Not at all, because you can still view the videos posted under reels or IGTV, just that there isn’t a dedicated category for the same.
Now this might upset some users – Instagram Lite lacks the support for much-loved dark mode. Many apps include in-build apps in phone have been using dark mode for quite some time. Even Google Chrome recently introduced dark mode.
Another difference that gets noticed while using the lite app is speed. When you click on a certain profile, it takes time to load and the images and video resolution are also adjusted to suit the platform. It might make you irked at times, with the loading bar progressing at a tortoisish speed. But, at least you have IG to use!
We would not suggest using Instagram Lite for business as Direct Messages, popularly acronymed DM’s have not been introduced in the app yet, but with a promise that this will be introduced at a later stage.
Now here’s the best part about the lite app (which we intentionally preserved for the end!) – it supports 8 regional languages – Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu. This makes it easier for people to interact in their mother-tongue.
As its clear that Instagram has made this move to reach out to people who want to explore the glories of Insta life but, are somehow stuck with some restrictions, either lingual based or technology based. Seems like Mark Zuckerberg wants to get every citizen listed on it’s database!
