In December 2020, Instagram Lite was launched in India. It was introduced to increase the reach of the platform on low end devices, which do not have all capabilities or storage that of a high-end smartphone. It is designed to work seamlessly with devices which have low processing memory and/or slow download bandwidth.

In February 2021, Instagram has introduced Reels to the platform – Instagram Lite.
This update might be attributed to the increase in the number of TikTok users (who use the app via VPN, since it was banned in India). Earlier in February, Instagram rolled out an update which mentioned that the reach of videos on IG, which carry Tik Tok watermark will be reduced, it’s a direct competition of IG reels.
The Facebook-owned company, in a statement, said that this feature was expedited for India because “of the traction Reels is seeing in India and the early adoption of the new Instagram Lite app.”
Another thing to be noted is that India is the one of the first countries to get this update, as it is one of the biggest marketers for the facebook-owned company.
Voila time for IG Lite users 👍
