Meta Strengthens Guidelines to Combat Misinformation Around Israel Hamas War

Israel Hamas War

Israel Hamas War is becoming more intense and social media haas also become the taarget to spread more hatred, particularly generating from misinformation.

And with the European Union’s new regulations on misinformation now in effect, the major platforms are already coming under scrutiny, with the EU issuing notices to Meta, X, and TikTok to remind them of its new, more stringent obligations.

In response to the EU’s request for more information regarding its crisis process, Meta says that it has:

  • Established a special operations center, staffed with experts that are fluent Hebrew and Arabic speakers, in order to monitor and respond to the evolving situation in real time
  • Implemented limits on recommendations of potentially violative content
  • Expanded its “Violence and Incitement” policy in order to remove content that clearly identifies hostages “even if it’s being done to condemn or raise awareness of their situation”
  • Restricted the use of hashtags that have been associated content that violates its Community Guidelines
  • Restricted the use of Live for users that have previously violated certain policies. Meta notes that it’s also prioritizing moderation of live-streams from the impacted region, with particular emphasis on Hamas’ threats to broadcast footage of hostages
  • Added warning labels on content that’s been rated “false” by third-party fact-checkers, while also applying labels to state-controlled media publishers.

The EU is bound to take action when any crises occours.

The penalties for failing to meet these obligations could be fines amounting to 6% of a company’s annual global revenue, not just its EU intake.

Regulators are not only focused on content related to the Israel Hamas war, but also falsehoods that could spread in connection with upcoming election in Europe in countries including Poland and the Netherlands.

Why is there a war between Israel and Hamas?

The Israel-Hamas conflict is a long-standing and complex geopolitical and military conflict primarily centered in the Gaza Strip and surrounding areas. It has its roots in the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which dates back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The conflict involves multiple parties, including the State of Israel and various Palestinian groups, with Hamas being one of the most prominent.

Here’s a brief overview of the key events and dynamics in the Israel-Hamas conflict:

  1. Historical Background: The roots of the conflict can be traced back to the late 19th century when Jewish immigration to Palestine, then part of the Ottoman Empire, began. Tensions between Jewish and Arab communities grew as Jewish immigrants sought to establish a homeland, and these tensions continued under British Mandate rule in the early 20th century.
  2. 1947-1949 War and Formation of Israel: The United Nations approved a plan in 1947 to partition Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states. This led to a war between Jewish and Arab forces, resulting in the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.
  3. 1967 Six-Day War: Israel captured the Gaza Strip and West Bank, including East Jerusalem, during the Six-Day War. These territories are at the center of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
  4. Hamas Emergence: Hamas, an Islamist Palestinian organization, was founded in 1987 during the First Intifada (Palestinian uprising) against Israeli rule. It gained support and gradually evolved into a significant political and military force.
  5. Gaza Strip and West Bank: The Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, are the two main areas where the conflict plays out. While the West Bank is governed by the Palestinian Authority, the Gaza Strip has been controlled by Hamas since 2007.
  6. Conflict and Ceasefires: The Israel-Hamas conflict has seen multiple rounds of violence and ceasefires. Tensions often flare up due to various factors, including rocket attacks from Gaza into Israel and Israeli military operations in response.
  7. Blockade and Humanitarian Concerns: The Gaza Strip has been under an Israeli and Egyptian blockade, which has had severe humanitarian consequences. The limited access to essential resources, including food and medical supplies, has resulted in suffering for the Palestinian population.
  8. International Involvement: The international community, including the United Nations and various countries, has been involved in efforts to mediate and bring about a peaceful resolution to the conflict. However, a lasting peace agreement has proven elusive.
  9. Ongoing Challenges: The Israel-Hamas conflict remains a deeply rooted and highly volatile issue, with both sides having strong historical, cultural, and political ties to the land. The conflict has resulted in loss of life, displacement, and ongoing tensions in the region.
