YouTube, world’s #1 free video viewing platform is testing out a new feature which would benefit viewers, sellers, and of course, YouTube (in order of increasing benefit!)
In an attempt to streamline ways to buy items that are shown on a particular ad, YouTube plans to include products as a part on video for advertisers. The plans are in an embryonic stage as of now and a few advertisers have opted for the feature. The details regarding the project haven’t been revealed yet. All that is known is, that the project will be tested and then rolled out in phases.
How YouTube shopping will work?
When you watch an ad on YouTube, the ad will contain a shopping bag icon in the bottom left of the screen. Once a user clicks on the shopping bag, it will display a list of the featured items related to that advertiser.
You’ll be able to check out more information about those products, watch related videos or buy the items. Only US users who access YouTube through Android, iOS and the web will see the shopping bag icon.
The Good/The Bad…?
On the one hand, the feature could actually prove to be useful and convenient, especially with the growing number of instructional videos on YouTube. Rather than having to scroll through the video description or comments section to hunt for links to mentioned ingredients or materials. Of course, YouTube is likely to benefit from such a system, monetarily or otherwise.
On the contrary, itโs going to irk some users who are already annoyed by intrusive ads on the platform. Unfortunately, integrated e-commerce features are nothing new on social media, like Facebook and Instagram, and itโs only a matter of time before Google, probably the worldโs biggest advertising business, wants a slice of that pie too.
