With a motive to save Planet Earth, Twitter has put a complete ban on ads that deny climate change.
The announcement came after European Union agreed a deal requiring big tech companies to vet their sites more closely for hate speech, disinformation and other harmful content, including climate change.
Twitter said in a statement on ads that deny climate change –
“We believe that climate denialism shouldn’t be monetised on Twitter, and that misrepresentative ads shouldn’t detract from important conversations about the climate crisis […] We recognise that misleading information about climate change can undermine efforts to protect the planet. In the coming months, we’ll have more to share on our work to add reliable, authoritative context to the climate conversations happening on Twitter.”
Earlier last week, Pinterest announced a ban on false climate change pins.
Twitter said it would provide more information in the coming months on how it plans to provide reliable, authoritative context to the climate conversations its users engage in, including from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
Hopefully, other platforms, specially the big sharks like Facebook and Instagram will follow the suit, and make climate change denial a specific banned element within their ad policies.
